Session 2: Moodle & Google Apps: A Blended Approach

Do your students ever get lost in your Moodle site?  Well, mine did but I didn't want to give up on using this great tool.  In the summer of 2010 I was introduced to a new method of organizing my course.  The following fall I adapted it to include the use of Google Apps.  My presentation gives the background for how I now use Moodle along with Google Apps to more fully meet the needs of my students.

Moodle & Google Apps: A Blended Approach

What's Different:

  • Picture index: Buttons link to a Moodle webpage in a topic section
  • Time Frame: A time frame for each unit is listed below the button.
  • The Unit Webpage: This page provides a unit overview and unit goals.  There are also links to all lessons for the unit.
  • Lesson Presentations: All lessons link out to a Google presentation containing pages for lecture, lab, resources and class notes.

Making the Change:

The initial setup is time consuming.  However, once it is finished lessons and labs can be tweaked or changed as you review what worked and didn't work when you evaluate each unit.

Organization:

This model has helped to keep things organized in such a way that students seldom get lost in a row of informatiuon. With the Google Docs and presentations being set to anyone with link can view, teachers and/or students in other classes also have easy access to information on my Moodle site.  One example would be the use of tutorials.  (which are currently closed for updating)

Learn More:  I will be presenting Building a Blended Moodle Google/Apps Site at MACUL in Detroit this March.

You are able to view my Moodle site as a guest.
